Conference to Focus on Cleaning Up Great Lakes Contaminations

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) plans to host the first-ever regional Great Lakes Environmental Remediation and Redevelopment Conference Oct. 16-18 in Lansing.
More than 500 environmental professionals from around the Great Lakes region will be hearing from experts and sharing information about remediation, emerging contaminants, program implementation and performance, redevelopment and region-wide interest
topics. Conference attendees will learn about management methods, successful solutions and best practices.
"We have so much in common across the Great Lakes region from our geography to our natural resources and economic development history," EGLE Director Liesl Clark said. "So it only makes sense for us to share our experience, the lessons we've learned
and innovative solutions to putting contaminated properties back to work for their communities. This conference is a catalyst for conversation, collaborations and partnerships -- all of which we need to effectively move forward on complex remediation and
redevelopment issues."
Conference highlights
- Plenary sessions will feature keynote speakers Grant Trigger, Revitalizing Auto Communities Environmental Response Trust; Liesl Clark, EGLE director; Cathy Stepp, U.S. EPA Region 5 administrator; in addition to a presentation on the History of Legal,
Regulatory, and Scientific Response to PFAS Contamination in the U.S. by attorney Robert Bilott.
- Multiple technical sessions will take place in five concurrent tracks -- remediation, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), program implementation and performance, redevelopment and region-wide interest.
- Demonstrations of the latest technologies and services.
- Sixty exhibitors will share their products, services and solutions.
- A Poster Session and Informal Reception will take place on Day 1.
- A Brownfield tour will happen on Day 2.
Day 3 will feature the PFAS Treatment Technologies Roundtable spearheaded by the State of Michigan's PFAS Action Response Team and industry experts.
Expected attendees include owners and operators of contaminated properties, realtors and developers, environmental consultants, attorneys, state and local units of government, federal and tribal agencies and environmental organizations.
