Steer Feedout Weigh-in and Grading Stats Released
Missouri Ag Connection - 11/20/2017

The 2017-18 Missouri Steer Feedout weigh-in and grading took place Nov. 7 at the Paris Veterinary Clinic and Joplin Regional Stockyards.

The northeast Missouri site had 47 steers from six owners. The southwest location had 156 head from 16 herds according to Eldon Cole, livestock specialist with University of Missouri Extension. The cattle were sent to a feedlot in Atlantic, IA where they will be fed out under the guidance of the Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity.

At each location, graders evaluated the steers for muscle and frame size. At the same time, they assigned a price per hundred that will be used during their feeding phase to help calculate the profitability of retained ownership.

The grading at Paris was handled by Steve Disselhorst with the Missouri Department of Agriculture market news service. Graders at JRS were Jodie Pitcock, St. Joseph and Britni Taylor, Des Moines. They are with USDA Agricultural Marketing Service and supervise livestock market news reporters in Missouri and Iowa.

The northeast steers weighed 736 lbs. and were priced at an average of $153.06. Their ranges were 542 to 886 lbs. and $140 to $170. Their feeder cattle grades were: 89 percent Large and 11 percent Medium frame and 77 percent one muscle score and 23 percent were 2's.

At Joplin, the 156 head weighed 710 lbs. with a range of 486 to 996 lbs. Prices went from $136 to $175. The grades on the frame were 67 percent Medium and 33 percent Large. The Muscle scores were 52 percent, 1's and 48 percent were 2's.

The feed out have been held in Iowa in cooperation with TCSCF since 2001.

"The objective of the program is to provide a low-risk opportunity for smaller cow herds to learn more how their feeder calves perform in the feedlot and on-the-rail," said Cole.

Results can be used in making genetic adjustments or management changes in their herds. Top-performing herds use their results in marketing future sets of calves, or they may choose to retain ownership on all of their calves the next year.
