Beef Cattle Group Recognizes Long-term Supporters
Missouri Ag Connection - 12/06/2016
During the annual meeting of the Southwest Missouri Beef Cattle Improvement Association in Springfield, special recognition was given to three, long-time supporters.
The Association annually recognizes a seedstock and a commercial producer for their improvement efforts. This tradition began in 1976 according to Eldon Cole, livestock specialist with University of Missouri Extension.
This year the group chose to honor three persons who raise cattle and are heavily involved in beef cattle improvement and promotion in various ways.
Those honored were Richard Eck of Pierce City, Mark Harmon of Mt. Vernon and J.D. Jennett of Sarcoxie. Each has served as ringmen at the association's twice-a-year tested bull sales.
Eck has worked 60 sales having started at the March 1987 sale which was held at Mt. Vernon. Harmon's first sale was in March 1992, also at Mt. Vernon. Jennett has completed 30 sales taking bids from customers since, 2002.
Plaques were presented to each in recognition of their outstanding support and dedication to the genetic improvement of beef cattle in southwest Missouri.
During the research for their long tenure, two other interesting items were discovered. The auctioneer for the BCIA's sales Jerry Lehmann, Lathrop cried his first bull sale in March 1992. This was his 50th sale.
A first-time consignor to the association's bull sale this fall was Don Birk of El Dorado Springs. Don served as a ringman at the very first SW MO BCIA sale in April 1973 when the sale was held at Nixa Livestock Auction. He represented Drovers Journal.
Persons interested in consigning to the bull sales may contact sale manager, Pam Naylor, Buffalo at 417-345-8330.
