Flooding Keeps MDC Areas Closed North of St. Joseph

Several Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) areas remain closed north of St. Joseph due to flooding near the Missouri River. They were first closed when river bottom flooding began in mid-March.

Some low-lying areas still have water on them, while others are threatened by new flooding as spring rains and snow melt continue to cause high-water conditions. Some areas are inaccessible due to road and bridge problems caused by earlier flooding, said Blaine Adams, MDC disaster response coordinator.

Three MDC river accesses with boat launching ramps have been cleaned and reopened. They include Payne Landing, Nodaway Island, and French Bottom. Getting river accesses reopened is a top priority. Other conservation areas will reopen after water levels drop, flood threats cease, and staff can evaluate needed repairs.

"We're doing the best we can to take care of things and to get back to normal," Adams said.

The following conservation areas or river accesses with boat ramps remain closed in northwest Missouri.

- Atchison County: Aspinwall Bend, Corning, Hoot Owl Bend, Langdon Bend, Lower Hamburg Bend, Upper and Lower Nishnabotna, and Watson Access.

- Holt County: Bob Brown, Derion Bend, Monkey Mountain, Rush Bottom Bend, Thurnau, Wolf Creek Bend.

- Andrew County: Tom Brown Access, Worthwine Island.

- Buchanan County: Dupree Memorial, Jentell Brees Access, Kneib Memorial.
