Steer Feedout Finale with Reveal July 2 in Mt. Vernon
Missouri Ag Connection - 06/24/2019

The last steers in the Missouri Feedout have been harvested and the results will be revealed at the July 2 "Finale." The event is open to all and begins at 7 p.m. at the University of Missouri Southwest Research Center, 14548 Hwy H, Mt. Vernon.

"The program will review the 230 head post-weaning gain results as well as carcass information from the twenty-two farms the steers came from across Missouri," said Eldon Cole, livestock specialist with University of Missouri Extension.

The steers were fed in Iowa as part of their Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity.

During the evening, a PowerPoint slide show will feature before and after pictures taken in November and May. Remarks made by the evaluation panel of marketers, order buyers and graders will be shared for those cattle processed at Joplin Regional Stockyards.

"The feedout provides cow-calf producers a chance to see how their cattle perform for the next segments of the industry. Owners can compare their animal's performance against their neighbors and make breeding stock changes if they feel it is necessary," said Cole.

The cooperative effort involves the following: Southwest Missouri Cattlemen's Association, University of Missouri Extension, Department of Agriculture-Market Division, Missouri Cattlemen's Association and the Iowa Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity Coop.

The feedout idea began in 1981 in southwest Missouri with cattle fed at a local farmer's yard and slaughtered at a locker plant at Verona. University of Missouri meats scientists provided the carcass grading.

Details on the added value feedout program may be obtained from a University of Missouri Extension field specialists in livestock. The next collection of cattle will be Nov. 5 for steers born after January 1, 2019.
