'Growing Food Locally' Theme of Twilight Garden and Pizza Tour

University of Missouri Extension specialists will lead a tour of local gardens ending at Millsap Farms in north Springfield from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Aug. 31.

The theme of this year's twilight garden tour is "Growing Food Locally."

Participants will tour community gardens, a home garden, and the gardens at Millsap Farms.

MU Extension specialists will be on hand speaking about locally grown food, as well as the health rewards and community betterment aspects of providing fresh foods.

"During a tour like this, our specialists make learning fun, and everyone who attends will benefit. If you like to garden, eat fresh and be healthy or just getting started, this is the event for you," said David Burton, county program director for MU Extension in Greene County.

At 4 p.m., attendees will gather in the community gardens at Wesley United Methodist Church, 922 W Republic Rd, Springfield, for a 30-minute tour with Master Gardener Carl Redmon.

At 5 pm, tour attendees will visit a home garden for a 30-minute tour. This stop is being coordinated by Kelly McGowan, horticulture educator with MU Extension.

At 6:00 pm, the tour arrives at The Fairbanks, 1126 N Broadway Ave, Springfield, to tour the community gardens. This stop is being coordinated by Dr. Pam Duitsman, nutrition specialist with MU Extension. Maile Auterson and Emilee Blansit will help with this tour stop and will provide education on Springfield Community Gardens.

The final tour stop will be at 7 p.m. at Millsap Farms, 6593 Emu Ln, Springfield. MU Extension Horticulture Specialist Patrick Byers is coordinating this stop and will help lead a walking tour of the gardens at Millsap Farm.

Millsap Farms is famous for its fresh Thursday night pizza. The pizzas are created using their seasonal fresh organically raised produce and local meats, cheeses, and sauces. There will be a limited number of tables, so bring chairs, or a picnic blanket to sit on.

Pizza is not included in the ticket price of the garden tour by rather is purchased separately at Millsap Farms.
