'Making Money Count' in Marshfield Sept. 7

University of Missouri Extension in Webster County is offering a monthly series of money management seminars with the next class being held from 9 a.m. to noon, Sept. 7 at the Webster County Extension Center on South Hwy A (next to City Hall), in Marshfield.

The seminar on Sept. 7 includes "Record Keeping and Taxes" and "Banking Services."

The first session covers why a record keeping system is needed, what records to keep, where to keep them and for how long. This session will also cover basics of tax returns, including forms needed, filing status choices, adjustments to income, deductions and tax credits.

"It does take some work to set up your record keeping system, but the good news is that you probably already have a start and very likely have most of the records you need to keep," said Nellie Lamers, family financial education specialist with MU Extension and instructor for the course. "This session includes easy steps you can take to set up or improve and maintain a good system, which leads to less time, stress and cost when you need to find your records."

The second session covers banking services like the types of accounts and managing your accounts, common mistakes people make and other banking services.

"Forgetting to record automatic withdrawals or ATM/debit transactions can lead to a ripple effect that costs a lot of money," said Lamers. "Electronic banking can be really convenient, we'll discuss safety and other possible problems it can cause."
