MCA Seeking Profitability Challenge Participants
Missouri Ag Connection - 11/24/2020

The Missouri Cattlemen's Association is gearing up to launch its new division of the Profitability Challenge "Top 100" Steer Feedout.

Last year, eligible steers were weaned in July and accepted in September, making up the Yearling Division. New this year is the Calf Fed Division with calves weaned on or before Oct. 28 and delivered Dec. 11-13.

"We were able to get quality data from the inaugural year of the Profitability Challenge and want to continue to expand," said Sydney Thummel, MCA Manager of Membership. "Our Profitability Challenge Committee wants the program to represent the full scope of the cattle industry in our state. Many of our producers calve in the fall as well as the spring and adding this second division will provide an avenue for all producers to compete."

Steers in the 2020-2021 Yearling Division are currently at the University of Missouri South Farm Research Center on full feed and nearing finishing while entries for the Calf Fed Division are still being accepted. Eligible steers will come from a Beef Quality Assurance Certified producer, be enrolled in MFA Health Track, weaned 45 days and bunk broke, in addition to receiving two rounds of shots and a negative BVD-PI test.

Once delivered, GrowSafe Technology is utilized to collect data that is shared with participants and used to determine the feed efficiency of the animal. In March, an open house is scheduled for producers and stakeholders to view the competing livestock.

The 2020-2021 Profitability Challenge is sponsored by MFA, Inc., Elanco Animal Health, the University of Missouri, Idexx, GrowSafe Systems and Y-Tex. To learn more or to enter your steer(s) in the challenge, contact Macey Hurst at macey@mocattle.com or 573-499-9162 ext. 235.
