NWF Conservation Champions Program Deadline Aug. 6
Missouri Ag Connection - 08/03/2021

National Wildlife Federation announced a new funding opportunity for producers and outreach partners this year: The 2021 Conservation Champions Program. Previously known as Cover Crop Champions, this opportunity will follow the same peer-to-peer model for farmer outreach, with a few exciting changes this year, including an expansion to include teams from Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana.

Since 2013, the Champions program has supported on-the-ground conservation outreach by providing teams of farmers and natural resource professionals across the Midwest with communications training and small grants to conduct "out of the box" outreach in their local communities. We welcome applications led by farmers, ranchers, conservation district, agency, and extension staff, NGOs, and others in the sustainable agriculture space. Funding is flexible and can be spent on time, travel and many other expenses associated with holding soil health focused events and other outreach.

The deadline to apply is Aug. 6. Program activities will begin in Fall.

What's new for 2021?

- An extended 18 month funding period, allowing for two seasons of outreach and longer term impact.

- The maximum funding request has been increased to $15,000 per team, previously $10,000.

- The outreach focus has been expanded beyond cover crops to include other relevant conservation practices and management systems on crop and grazing lands.

- An increased focus on evaluation to show on-the-ground impact of your outreach efforts, including more support from NWF staff.

- An expanded geography to include new states.
