Drought a Concern in Illinois and Missouri With Areas 'Abnormally Dry'

Parts of southern Illinois and a majority of Missouri have such high drought concerns that it's sparking memories of the drought of 2012.
Current data from the National Integrated Drought Information System shows 44.8% of the Land of Lincoln is labeled as "abnormally dry." This includes the St. Louis Metro East, parts of Springfield and areas along the Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana and Kentucky borders.
About 30.6% of Illinois is in a "moderate drought" state — this includes areas around Chicago, areas east, north and northwest and southeast of Springfield in places like Peoria, Galesburg and Champaign.
Conditions are far worse west of the Mississippi River in Missouri where the state's governor has signed an executive order declaring a drought alert.
"While we cannot control the weather, we are committed to doing everything we can to alleviate the strain drought causes for our agricultural families and protect our food supply chains," Missouri Gov. Mike Parson said in a statement. "Missouri farmers and ranchers often bear the brunt of the consequences of drought, and we are already starting to see early effects on crops and livestock."
Nearly half of the Show-Me State is in a drought status (49.6%) and 30.4% of the state is "abnormally dry," according to data from the National Integrated Drought Information System.
