NBB Welcomes Deadline for RFS Exemption Petitions
Missouri Ag Connection - 09/28/2020

The National Biodiesel Board thanked House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson (D-MN) for including the Renewable Fuel Standard Integrity provision (Title VI, Subtitle D) in the Expanding Access to Sustainable Energy Act of 2019 (HR 4447), which the House passed today. The provision would set a June 1 deadline for annual small refinery exemption petitions, thereby ensuring they are accounted for in the RFS calculations. Further, it would require public disclosure of the volumes of biofuels potentially impacted by the petition along with the name of the petitioner.

Kurt Kovarik, NBB's vice president of federal affairs, states, "This is a commonsense step to ensure that RFS biomass-based diesel volumes are fully met and to prevent a recurrence of the demand destruction for biodiesel that we've seen over the past several years. Biodiesel and renewable diesel producers have a right to know how many gallons of their product may be lost from RFS volumes when major refiners like Exxon ask for special treatment."

Made from an increasingly diverse mix of resources such as recycled cooking oil, soybean oil and animal fats, biodiesel and renewable diesel are better, cleaner fuels that are available now for use in existing diesel engines without modification. NBB is the U.S. trade association representing the entire biodiesel and renewable diesel value chain, including producers, feedstock suppliers, and fuel distributors.
