Learn Safe Land Burning at MDC Workshop November 7

Learn Safe Land Burning at MDC Workshop November 7

By Blake Jackson

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is inviting landowners to take part in a prescribed burn workshop on November 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at Lincoln University’s Carver Farm in Jefferson City.

Prescribed burning is a proven method for improving native plant diversity and managing unwanted vegetation. However, when done incorrectly, it can be hazardous and ineffective. This workshop will cover essential techniques for safely planning and carrying out a prescribed burn as part of land management practices.

Those interested must register in advance at short.mdc.mo.gov/o4Q. After registration, participants are required to complete an online training course before attending the workshop. The online course costs $25, and participants should bring their completion certificate to the event. The course can be accessed at short.mdc.mo.gov/ZoU.

Weather permitting, attendees will also observe a demonstration burn. Participants should wear long-sleeved shirts, pants made of natural fibers, leather gloves, and leather boots for safety.

For additional information, contact MDC Private Lands Conservationist Ryan Westcott at ryan.westcott@mdc.mo.gov. The workshop will be held at 3804 Bald Hill Road, Jefferson City.
