Foremost Dairy is a unique training ground where veterinary and agriculture students work together to learn and grow. Located near Columbia, Missouri, the facility is part of the Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station and supports cross-disciplinary learning.
The partnership between the University of Missouri’s College of Veterinary Medicine and CAFNR allows students to gain practical, hands-on experience with dairy cows.
Vet students visit the herd twice weekly, offering more interaction than most farms, which strengthens their diagnostic and herd management skills.
“The Foremost Dairy Facility stands as a remarkable resource for both faculty and students at the University of Missouri,” said Dr. Celeste Morris. “It allows for studies and education in dairy science, animal health and management practices.”
For students unfamiliar with livestock, this experience is especially important. Dairy cows, known for their calm nature due to daily human contact, offer an ideal learning environment. These interactions help build confidence in students and prepare them for careers in livestock care.
Director Dusty Walter emphasized the mutual benefits of the program. “While their students gain access to experiences with our animals, our animals are getting the best care available,” he said.
Foremost Dairy doesn’t just educate—it also supports animal health through high-quality veterinary attention. This cooperative model ensures both student growth and animal well-being.
With continued support from both colleges, Foremost Dairy stands out as a leader in practical education, helping future veterinarians and agriculturalists develop the confidence and knowledge needed for real-world success.
