The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is offering a free introductory workshop on tree-saddle hunting for deer hunters and outdoor enthusiasts on Saturday, August 15, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center in Blue Springs.
Tree-saddle hunting is a lightweight, mobile hunting technique that allows hunters to remain elevated while secured to a tree with a specialized saddle harness and ropes.
Instead of sitting on a traditional tree stand, hunters rest in the saddle while facing the tree, giving them greater flexibility and mobility. Because the equipment is compact and portable, this method is especially useful for reaching remote locations or hunting in areas where conventional tree stands are difficult to use.
The beginner-friendly workshop will be led by members of Western Missouri Saddle Hunters and is designed to introduce participants to the fundamentals of saddle hunting.
Attendees will learn how to choose the proper equipment, use rope-assisted climbing techniques, safely climb trees, and remain comfortable during extended hunts.
Instructors will also cover practical scouting strategies, tree selection, and climbing methods that can improve confidence and efficiency in the field.
Participants are welcome to bring their own gear for hands-on practice. Long pants and closed-toe shoes with good traction are required. Youth ages 14 to 17 may attend when accompanied by an adult. Registration is required, and space is limited.
