Livestock Industry Veteran Helps Shape Missouri Beef Future

Bill Patton, Livestock Market Representative on the Missouri Beef Industry Council Board, has spent decades building a career centered around cattle marketing, livestock auctions, and supporting the beef industry.

Along with his family, he owns and operates South Central Regional Stockyards in Vienna, Missouri, a family business that has served cattle producers since they purchased the facility in 1994.

After moving from Kansas in 1990, the Patton family continued expanding the operation. In 2016, Bill and his brother acquired full ownership and maintained the stockyard as a family-run business. Today, the market holds weekly cattle sales every Wednesday and attracts consignments from producers across a wide regional area.

The stockyard’s StarVac Health Program plays an important role in promoting herd health and helping buyers feel confident about their purchases.

The operation also supports Beef Quality Assurance practices, reflecting Bill’s commitment to responsible cattle handling and producing high-quality beef.

Bill’s connection to the livestock auction industry began with his family. Inspired by his father’s career in the sale barn business, Bill attended auctioneer school after high school and eventually became an auctioneer himself. His experience and dedication earned him recognition as a two-time second-place finisher in the Missouri State Auctioneer Contest.

Through years of operating a family business, Bill has learned the importance of flexibility, teamwork, and persistence. While the cattle industry continues to face challenges such as changing demographics and reduced cattle numbers in some areas, he remains confident about its future.

Bill joined the Missouri Beef Industry Council after encouragement from Grant Potadle of the Livestock Marketing Association. He believes consumer education is one of the most valuable uses of beef checkoff investments, especially programs that connect young people with agriculture.

Looking forward, Bill sees strong opportunities for cattle producers as demand for beef remains steady. He also emphasizes the need for industry collaboration to address concerns such as animal health threats. Whether enjoying a grilled ribeye or a simple weeknight meal, Bill continues to appreciate the beef industry that has shaped his life and family legacy.
