Missouri Team Studies Climate Effects on Farmer Health

By Blake Jackson

Researchers at the University of Missouri are examining how extreme weather events influence the mental health of Midwestern farmers. The project is led by Jennifer First, an assistant professor in the MU School of Social Work, with support from Michael Sunde, a natural resources specialist with MU Extension.

Their goal is to better understand the ways environmental pressures and climate-related concerns affect farmers’ stress levels, sleep patterns, and overall well-being.

The study will involve 40 farmers from across the Midwest. To support the research, the Missouri Resource Assessment Partnership and the Center for Applied Research and Engagement System will conduct geospatial analysis. Their work will help connect historical weather extremes with the potential impacts on farmer health.

Sunde noted that participants must be at least 18 years old and actively farming in the Midwest. Farmers who join the study will take part in a confidential interview lasting between 45 and 60 minutes, conducted either in person, over the phone, or via Zoom. Each participant will receive a $40 gift card in appreciation for their time.
