According to Jenny Marie Lawrence for Lincoln University of Missouri, young livestock exhibitors demonstrated their sheep-production knowledge during the Youth Sheep Skillathon at the Missouri State Fair.
Organized by Lincoln University Cooperative Extension, the event challenged participants on a variety of topics related to sheep management and production.
The competition featured three age divisions: 8-10, 11-13, and 14 and older. Contestants completed a 10-question multiple-choice quiz designed specifically for their age group. Questions covered important subjects such as sheep breeds, feed ingredients, proper animal handling, and general flock-management practices.
“After a year away, it was exciting to bring the Skillathon back," said Extension Associate Sarah Glendening with Lincoln’s Small Ruminant Program. "Many of them remembered it from previous years and were excited to see it return.”
Approximately 30 young people participated in the event, with many registering on the day of the contest. Winners were determined based on their quiz scores, while completion time was used to break ties among participants with identical scores.
Top finishers in the younger age divisions received gift cards for first, second, and third places, while two winners were recognized in the oldest division.
In addition to hosting the Skillathon, Lincoln University’s Small Ruminant Program used the Missouri State Fair as an opportunity to connect with livestock producers and families.
Glendening and Mohan Acharya, Ph.D., Extension State Specialist, provided information about educational programs focused on sheep and goat nutrition, health, and management. Visitors also learned about research-based resources available through Lincoln University Extension.
The event highlighted the importance of youth agricultural education while encouraging participants to strengthen their knowledge of sheep production. By combining competition with learning, the Skillathon helped prepare future livestock producers and agricultural leaders while showcasing the value of hands-on agricultural education at the state fair.
