Record-Speed Planting Amidst Dry Weather: Farmers Hope for Much-Needed Rain

Farmers this season have achieved record-breaking planting speeds, thanks in part to an extended period of dry weather. However, as forecasts predict a significant amount of rain in the upcoming week, many farmers are eagerly anticipating much-needed moisture for their crops.

According to the latest Missouri Crop Progress report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistical Service (NASS), the week ending May 28, 2023, saw 6.8 days suitable for fieldwork. Average temperatures during the week were slightly below normal at 66.5 degrees, while precipitation remained below average at 0.08 inches.

The report indicates that topsoil moisture supply is rated at 17% very short, 45% short, and 38% adequate. Similarly, subsoil moisture supply is reported at 16% very short, 42% short, 41% adequate, and 1% surplus.

Corn planting progress has been significant, with 93% emergence reported as of May 21, surpassing the 5-year average by 17%. Corn conditions are rated as 3% very poor, 11% poor, 31% fair, 52% good, and 3% excellent.

Soybean planting progress in Missouri has also made substantial gains, with 86% of the crop already planted as of May 21, surpassing the 5-year average by 39%. Soybean emergence stands at 69%, well ahead of the 5-year average of only 30%. Soybean conditions are reported as 3% very poor, 11% poor, 35% fair, 47% good, and 4% excellent.
