Backyard Laying Hen Workshop Oct. 29 in Brunswick

University of Missouri Extension, in collaboration with Lincoln University Extension, will hold a backyard laying hen workshop 1-4 p.m. Oct. 29 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, 203 E. Harrison St., Brunswick.

Participants will learn about basic management practices to ensure a healthy backyard flock, biosecurity, licensing and labeling requirements, and processing, washing and grading eggs, says MU Extension livestock specialist Heather Conrow. Hands-on opportunities include equipment demonstrations, how to determine if hens are still laying, and processing, candling and grading of eggs.

"Whether you have just a few chickens in your backyard or you have a bustling farmers market egg business, there will be something for you to learn," says Tatijana Fisher, poultry specialist with LU Extension.

Conrow encourages 4-H and FFA youths to attend. 4-H'ers will receive four poultry project hours for attending this hands-on workshop. "We really want to see the younger generations get involved in these types of projects," Conrow says.

Advance registration is required, and enrollment is limited. To register, contact MU Extension in Chariton County at 660-288-3239.

For more information, contact Conrow, MU Extension in Howard County, at 660-248-2272 or hconrow@missouri.edu. Visit Howard County Extension's Facebook page at facebook.com/HoCoExtension for information on other programs.
