“There’s so many uses,” said Hemmes. “What companies are looking for is finding sustainable answers. Boy, soybeans sure check that box.”
She also highlighted other unique uses for soy, including sprays to protect shingles and concrete, kitty litter, wood glue, artificial turf and firefighting foam. Hemmes said the foam is a new product with the potential to replace firefighting foam made with substances that can cause environmental concerns because they do not break down naturally.
