Missouri farmers brace for challenging 2025

Missouri farmers brace for challenging 2025

By Blake Jackson

The University of Missouri Extension Crop Conference, scheduled for December 4-5 in Columbia, will provide farmers and agricultural professionals with insights into the evolving agricultural landscape in 2025.

Ben Brown, an MU Extension specialist in risk management, will delve into the current state of crop markets, input costs, and agricultural policy.

Ben Brown will discuss the recent decline in commodity prices due to strong global production and increased demand at lower prices. Despite these factors, excess supply continues to put downward pressure on prices received by producers.

Brown will also shed light on the customizable row crop production budgets developed by MU Extension. These budgets provide detailed estimates for prices, production, and input costs, including separate projections for southeastern Missouri.

For 2025, the budgets indicate potential challenges, with negative returns over total costs. To improve profitability, farmers may need to rely on higher crop prices, above-average yields, or a combination of both.

With the upcoming changes in leadership within the Senate Agriculture Committee and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Brown will also discuss the potential implications for agricultural policy. The new administration may introduce new priorities and initiatives, which could impact farmers and the agricultural industry as a whole.

In addition to Brown's presentation, the conference will feature over 15 sessions led by renowned agricultural experts. These sessions will cover a wide range of topics, including weed management, pest control, soil health, and precision agriculture.

The conference will be held at the Columbia Hilton Garden Inn and Conference Center, offering a convenient and informative setting for attendees.

By attending this conference, farmers and agricultural professionals can gain valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities facing the industry in 2025 and beyond.

Registration deadline is Nov. 21.
