Missouri's agricultural outlook for 2024 shows mixed trends across various crops, with some increases in acreage and production, alongside yield adjustments.

For corn, the state has planted an estimated 3.45 million acres, marking a 10% reduction from the previous year. The forecasted harvested area stands at 3.26 million acres, down 11% from last year.

However, Missouri’s corn yield is expected to rise significantly to 182 bushels per acre, an increase of 29 bushels compared to 2023. Overall, corn production is projected to reach 593 million bushels, reflecting a 6% increase from last year.

Soybean production is also on an upward trajectory in Missouri. The planted area is estimated at 5.90 million acres, up 5% from 2023, and the harvested area is forecast to rise by 6% to 5.83 million acres.

Despite a slight decrease in yield, with an expected 47 bushels per acre down by 1 bushel from last year soybean production is projected at 274 million bushels, marking a 3% increase from 2023.

The state’s cotton crop has seen notable growth in terms of acreage. With 400,000 acres planted 19% more than in 2023 the harvested area is expected to reach 380,000 acres, a 15% increase from the previous year.

However, the cotton yield is expected to decrease slightly, with a forecast of 1,263 pounds per acre, down 98 pounds from last year. Despite this, total production is projected to reach 1 million bales (480 pounds), a 7% increase.

Lastly, Missouri’s rice crop is also expanding, with 220,000 acres planted, a 7% rise from last year. The forecast for harvested area is 214,000 acres, also up by 7%.

The rice yield is expected to decline slightly, forecast at 7,700 pounds per acre down by 290 pounds compared to 2023. Nevertheless, production is still expected to increase by 3%, reaching 16.5 million cwt.

Overall, Missouri’s crop production shows both challenges and opportunities as farmers navigate changing conditions and market dynamics.
