Missouri Offers Grants for Specialty Crops

Missouri Offers Grants for Specialty Crops

By Blake Jackson

The Missouri Department of Agriculture has announced that it is now accepting applications for its Specialty Crop Block Grant Program. This initiative is designed to enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops within the state and beyond.

Specialty crops are defined by the USDA as fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, honey, horticulture, and nursery crops, including floriculture. These crops are vital for food diversity and local economies.

The grant program supports a wide range of projects, including expanding market opportunities at local, regional, and international levels. It also focuses on improving distribution channels, advancing educational programs, and conducting crop-specific research. In addition, the grant encourages marketing and promotion activities, food safety improvements, and solutions to pest and disease challenges.

Eligible applicants include individuals, community organizations, nonprofits, and research institutions committed to enhancing Missouri’s specialty crop sector. Each project may receive up to $50,000, with a two-year grant period. Approved projects will be reimbursed on a quarterly basis. It is important to note that no advance payments will be made.

Applications will be reviewed and selected projects will be included in Missouri’s State Plan for submission to the USDA for final approval.

Those interested in applying can do so online by visiting the Missouri Department of Agriculture’s official website at Agriculture.Mo.Gov. The final deadline to submit applications is Wednesday, July 2, by 3 p.m.

For more information on the grant and other programs, applicants are encouraged to visit the Missouri Department of Agriculture website.

This opportunity plays an important role in strengthening local agriculture and supporting growers in their efforts to provide high-quality specialty crops.
