Missouri program reimburses farmers for black vulture kills

Missouri program reimburses farmers for black vulture kills

By Blake Jackson

A new program in Missouri is helping farmers recover from damage caused by black vultures. The program, which is administered by the Missouri Department of Agriculture, reimburses farmers up to $200 for each positive necropsy of a positive black vulture kill.

Black vultures are migratory birds that have become more of a problem for farmers and livestock in recent years. The birds are known to be aggressive and have been known to prey on calves, piglets, and other small livestock.

While black vultures are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, there are steps that farmers can take to protect their property from them. These steps include cutting down dead trees, hanging effigies, and shooting fireworks towards or near the birds.

If you think you might have a claim because a black vulture killed livestock on your farm, or if you need assistance deterring black vultures from your property, CLICK HERE.
