The University of Missouri is offering a free webinar series focused on issues important to horse owners. The second session in the series will take place at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23.
This session will explore the challenges horse owners face with weeds in pastures and dry lots, according to MU Extension livestock specialist Elizabeth Picking.
While some weeds are simply bothersome, others can be dangerous. Certain pasture weeds are toxic and pose serious health risks to horses.
One such example is perilla mint, a common summer weed in Missouri. If consumed in hay or fresh pasture, it can lead to respiratory problems or even death in horses.
The upcoming webinar will feature Tim Evans, an associate professor and extension specialist in veterinary medicine at MU. Evans is known across Missouri for his expertise in veterinary toxicology and is a key resource for livestock and horse owners dealing with toxic plants.
Those interested can register for the July 23 webinar at https://extension.missouri.edu/events/horsemens-webinar-series-toxic-weeds-for-horses. A recording will be available for registrants who are unable to attend the live event. For more information, contact Elizabeth Picking at 417-256-2391 or pickinge@missouri.edu.
