Missouri Farmers Invited to Free Crop and Forage Update

By Blake Jackson

Row crop and livestock producers are invited to the University of Missouri Extension’s fourth annual Crop and Forage Chat on Aug. 14 at Hall’s Hall in Palmyra. The event offers the latest updates on crop diseases, insect pressures, and forage strategies.

Doors open at 5 p.m. with dinner served at 5:30 p.m., followed by presentations from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The event is free, but registration is required to attend.

MU Extension agronomist Nick Wesslak noted the evening will feature practical insights for corn and soybean producers, as well as livestock farmers facing drought and winter forage challenges.

Featured speakers include:

  • Dr. Mandy Bish, MU Extension plant pathologist, discussing current corn and soybean diseases, including tar spot, red crown rot, and corn stunt.
  • Nick Wesslak, addressing insect threats such as Japanese beetles and stink bugs and their effect on crop yields.
  • Alan Perry, bison producer and Missouri Forage and Grasslands Council member, on building drought-resilient livestock operations.
  • Rusty Lee, MU agronomist, sharing cost-effective winter forage strategies, including strip-grazing milo.
  • Daniel Mallory, livestock specialist, discussing the labor- and cost-saving benefits of stockpiling tall fescue.

To register, visit the MU Extension website or call Nick Wesslak at 573-470-3435.
