Geopolitical events can have a significant impact on Missouri's economy and agriculture, driving up or down prices depending on what is happening.
Representative Mike Haffner, who co-chairs the Missouri Legislature's Joint Committee on Agriculture, is keeping an eye on the news and is concerned about the impact of the current geopolitical instability on Missouri's farmers and ranchers.
Haffner intends to reintroduce a piece of legislation that failed to pass this year that would prevent certain countries from buying any Missouri land and restrict foreign ownership of farmland.
Haffner believes that this legislation is necessary to protect Missouri's food security and agricultural economy. He argues that foreign ownership of farmland could lead to higher food prices and could make Missouri more vulnerable to disruptions in the global food supply.
The legislation is likely to face opposition from some farmers and ranchers who believe that it would restrict their ability to sell their land to the highest bidder. However, Haffner believes that the legislation is necessary to protect Missouri's long-term interests.
