SNAP Funding Secured During Shutdown

SNAP Funding Secured During Shutdown

By Jamie Martin

In a critical move, a federal judge has directed the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to continue distributing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding during the ongoing federal government shutdown. This temporary order enables the USDA to use contingency funds to prevent a lapse in monthly assistance for over 42 million Americans.

Hope Mayor Tim McDonough, Chair of the League’s OEM Task Force, reported that while this ruling provides temporary relief, SNAP users may face a short delay in benefit replenishments, expected by Tuesday or Wednesday. Officials recommend that SNAP beneficiaries check their Families First EBT card balances before making purchases.

Authorities have also issued a warning about potential fraud attempts. Beneficiaries should be cautious—no official agency will call, text, or email asking for personal information related to SNAP. Any such messages should be ignored and reported immediately.

The New Jersey State Police and the Office of Emergency Management confirmed that more information will be provided by the Attorney General’s office shortly.

League Executive Director Mike Cerra stated that the organization remains in close communication with state officials and will continue to keep residents informed as updates unfold.
