Beef Month Highlights Missouri’s Cattle Industry Success

By Blake Jackson

May’s recognition as Beef Month serves as an important reminder of the major role the cattle industry plays in Missouri’s agricultural economy and rural communities.

According to Garrett Hawkins, the state’s beef sector continues to be one of the strongest contributors to Missouri agriculture.

Missouri remains one of the leading cattle-producing states in the country, maintaining an inventory of nearly four million head of cattle.

The state is home to more than 1.8 million beef cows spread across approximately 60,000 farms, ranking Missouri third nationally in beef cow numbers. The cattle industry’s scale reflects the dedication of farm families and ranchers across the state.

Beyond production numbers, the beef sector delivers a major economic boost. Annual beef sales generate close to $2 billion and support more than 40,000 jobs throughout Missouri.

The industry also contributes significantly to the state’s overall agricultural economy, valued at $93.7 billion.

The benefits of cattle production extend well beyond individual farms. Missouri’s beef industry supports veterinarians, feed suppliers, transportation companies, meat processors, retailers, and many other businesses connected to agriculture. These partnerships help strengthen rural economies and sustain small-town communities across the state.

Beef Month also highlights the hard work and resilience of cattle producers. Ranchers regularly face challenges including fluctuating markets, rising production expenses, and uncertain weather conditions.

Despite these pressures and the shrinking national cattle herd, producers continue working to provide safe, high-quality beef while investing in the future of the industry.

Hawkins also reflected on the personal rewards of raising cattle and raising children on the farm. He noted that caring for livestock teaches young people important life skills such as responsibility, patience, compassion, and perseverance. Experiences like helping care for calves or tending to animals create lessons that extend far beyond daily farm chores.

As Missouri celebrates Beef Month, the observance also recognizes the farm families and rural communities that help keep one of the state’s most important agricultural industries thriving.
