Missouri Ag Connection - 10/13/2021

University of Missouri Extension in Howard County, in collaboration with Lincoln University Cooperative Extension, will hold a Backyard Laying Hen Workshop 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Howard County Fairgrounds in Fayette.

Participants will learn basic management practices to ensure a healthy backyard flock, says MU Extension livestock specialist Heather Conrow.

"Whether you have just a few chickens in your backyard or you have a bustling farmers market egg business, there will be something for you to learn," says Tatijana Fisher, state poultry specialist with Lincoln University Extension.

Hands-on opportunities include equipment demonstration, how to check if hens are still laying, and processing, candling and grading of eggs. Other topics include biosecurity and licensing and labeling requirements.

Preregistration is required. Enrollment is limited to 30. An additional session may be offered if more than 30 people register.

FFA and 4-H youths are encouraged to attend. 4-H'ers will receive four poultry project hours for attending, says Conrow. "We really want to see the younger generations get involved in these types of projects."

For more information or to register, contact Conrow by Oct. 13 at 660-248-2272 or hconrow@missouri.edu.
