The University of Missouri Extension will host its Crop and Pest Management Field Day on July 10 at the MU Bradford Research Farm in Columbia.
The event provides a valuable opportunity for farmers and agricultural professionals to learn the latest best practices for managing key pests in corn and soybean production.
MU Extension weed scientist Kevin Bradley and his research team will present findings and guidance on effective weed management strategies. “Johnsongrass has developed resistance to glyphosate in some areas and is listed as a noxious weed by the Missouri Department of Agriculture,” said Bradley.
“Waterhemp continues to be a major problem in Missouri corn and soybean and has developed resistance to most of the postemergence herbicides commonly used to control this weed.” Bradley will address the challenges posed by herbicide-resistant weeds and their implications for future crop production systems.
The field day will also feature updates from MU researchers on the integration of drone technology for applying herbicides and fungicides in crop fields.
Attendees will visit field stops highlighting innovative uses for older herbicides and how environmental conditions can impact the effectiveness of glufosinate.
After lunch, participants will have time to walk through and observe various weed management demonstrations at their own pace.
The event includes guided wagon tours, lunch, and refreshments, with a registration fee of $30. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m., and tours start at 8:30 a.m.
