The University of Missouri Extension will host its third annual Sheep and Goat Field Day on Thursday, July 31, in Mount Vernon. Designed for current and prospective producers, the event aims to support those looking to raise small ruminants or diversify their farming operations.
“The event provides an excellent opportunity for sheep and goat producers, and anyone interested in diversifying their farm with small ruminants, to learn, connect and engage,” said David Brown, MU Extension small ruminant specialist.
Scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the event will take place at the MU Southwest Research, Extension and Education Center, located at 14548 State Road H, Mount Vernon.
The program includes a range of expert presentations and interactive demonstrations. One of the day’s highlights is a live demonstration of virtual fencing technology, which lets users set fencing boundaries through a mobile app. Attendees can also participate in a live “Ask the Veterinarian” session to discuss animal health concerns directly with veterinary professionals.
Session topics and speakers include:
- Hoof Care: Dr. Celeste Morris, University of Missouri
- Forage and Grazing: Harley Naumann, MU Extension
- First Aid for Small Ruminants: Dr. Kirk Hubbard, Highland Animal Hospital
- Biosecurity Practices: Dr. Corinne Bromfield, MU Extension
- Virtual Fencing Demo: Kaitlyn Dozler, MU Center for Regenerative Agriculture
- Reproductive Techniques (AI and Embryo Transfer): Jordan Thomas, MU
- FAMACHA Certification: David Brown, MU Extension
The registration fee is $25 per person and includes educational materials, vendor resources, refreshments, lunch, and lamb kebabs or meatballs.
Register online or by calling the St. Clair County MU Extension Center at 417-646-2419 by July 25. For accommodation requests or additional information, contact David Brown at the same number or via email at davidbrown@missouri.edu.
