Boost summer grazing - native grasses for cattle

By Blake Jackson

The University of Missouri Extension (MU Extension) is hosting a free workshop focused on native warm-season (NWS) grasses for cattle operations.

This event, held in collaboration with several partner organizations, aims to equip producers with valuable knowledge and skills to enhance their summer grazing strategies.

"Native warm-season grasses offer significant potential as forage sources for cattle, particularly during the summer months," explains Patrick Davis, a livestock field specialist with MU Extension.

The workshop, scheduled for July 22nd at Kevin Welsh Farm in Fair Play, Missouri, will delve into the establishment and management of NWS grasses for cattle grazing. This practical session promises to benefit producers seeking to improve the productivity and profitability of their operations.

The program features a panel discussion led by experts in the field:

  • Kevin Welsh, a local farmer and landowner, will share his experience using NWS grasses in his fall-calving cow-calf operation.
  • Terry Halleran, an MU Extension agronomy field specialist, will provide insights into NWS grass establishment techniques.
  • Landry Jones, a natural resource grazing conservation specialist with MFA, will discuss effective grazing management strategies for NWS pastures.

Following the presentations, participants will embark on a farm tour led by Kevin Welsh, showcasing his NWS grass plantings and their integration into his grazing system.

"This free event is open to the public and includes a complimentary meal," highlights Davis. The workshop is made possible through the collaborative efforts of MU Extension and the MU/Missouri Department of Conservation Native Grass Group.

By attending this informative workshop, cattle producers can gain valuable knowledge and practical tips to leverage the benefits of NWS grasses in their summer grazing practices, potentially leading to improved herd performance and overall business success.
