Improve livestock care - calving workshop in Missouri

By Blake Jackson

Livestock producers are invited to attend an in-depth calving workshop on January 9, 2025, at the Southwest Research Center, located at 14548 Hwy H, Mt. Vernon, MO 65712.

The workshop will run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with participants able to select from two sessions—9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The workshop focuses on hands-on demonstrations and practical techniques for livestock management during calving season. Attendees will gain experience in calf pulling, tubing, and evaluating Body Condition Scores and weights.

Key topics covered include:

  • Identifying calf positions during delivery
  • Assisting livestock through challenging births
  • Caring for newborn calves after delivery
  • Post-birth care for cows following difficult labor

The training is designed to help producers build confidence in handling calving complications while improving the health and survival rates of both calves and cows.

The cost for the workshop is $45.00, payable to MU Extension of Barry County.
