Jeff Wood Wins Early Career Ag Award

Jeff Wood, assistant professor in the School of Natural Resources, has been awarded the 2025 ag innovation Early Career Excellence in Agricultural Innovation Award. This recognition comes from ag Innovation North Central, which supports agricultural research across 12 U.S. states.

Dr. Wood was honored for his groundbreaking research on the “breathing of the biosphere,” which studies how forests and agroecosystems respond to extreme weather events. His work helps the scientific community better understand how nature copes with climate stress, contributing to the sustainability of agriculture and forestry.

“Dr. Wood’s impactful research on the ‘breathing of the biosphere,’ provides critical insight into stress resilience of forests and other agroecosystems caused by extreme weather events,” said Hector Santiago, ag innovation North Central chairman. “Moreover, the scientific community greatly respects him as a scientist, as evidenced by his role as a journal editor, expert reviewer on federal agency proposals, awards received, and invitations to speak at professional society conferences.”

The award celebrates early-career researchers who have achieved excellence through meaningful research. This includes maintaining a strong record of publications, grants, and patents; promoting inclusivity; receiving professional recognition; and showing leadership in research collaboration.

Dr. Wood’s achievements reflect these standards. His work is widely respected for its high impact and his efforts to build partnerships within and beyond academia. He is also committed to developing future scientists through mentorship and teamwork.
