Missouri 4-H Horse Judging Contest Winners Announced

Missouri 4-H Horse Judging Contest Winners Announced

By Blake Jackson

The University of Missouri Extension State 4-H Horse Judging Contest, held at William Woods University in Fulton on March 1st, drew 88 young participants from across Missouri.

The event, organized by MU Extension, aimed to enhance students' equine knowledge and provide insight into William Woods University's equine program.

Youths, divided into age categories, competed in horse judging, with top performers recognized across different age groups. In the 8-10 age group, Evelyn Carson from Boone County led the standings. Top junior competitors (ages 8-13) were led by Clancy Jones of Newton County, with Newton County also securing the top junior team award.

Kadence Mills of Newton County topped the senior division (ages 14-18), while the Laclede County senior team earned first place and will represent Missouri at the national contest in November.

Participants reported significant growth in their ability to interpret discipline patterns, identify equine anatomy, and articulate their judging placements. Notably, 92% of competitors felt their ability to evaluate equine conformation had improved.

Kelsey Fuller, MU Extension state 4-H agriculture educator, highlighted the contest's impact, noting that many participants expressed a desire to further their agricultural knowledge, share their expertise, and pursue agricultural careers. The event also served as a valuable opportunity for students to explore their passion for equine studies.

The contest not only honed practical skills but also fostered a deeper appreciation for agriculture and equine science among Missouri's youth.
