NGFA Supports Faster Action on Grain Law Renewal

NGFA Supports Faster Action on Grain Law Renewal

By Jamie Martin

The National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) is encouraging quick Senate action to reauthorize the U.S. Grain Standards Act (USGSA), which helps protect the quality and fairness of U.S. grain trade.

Speaking to the Senate Agriculture Committee, Nick Friant of Cargill, who chairs NGFA’s Grain Grades and Weights Committee, shared the group’s main goals. He previously gave similar testimony to the House Agriculture Committee. That panel passed a bipartisan bill on July 22.

Friant asked Congress to invest in new grain grading technology. These modern tools would help inspectors work more efficiently and ensure better results. He also emphasized the need for emergency waivers. These allow grain exports to continue during unexpected problems such as natural disasters or technical failures.

Another priority is fee reform. Friant said inspection fees should only apply to regulated grains and urged clearer communication on how fees are set. He also called for better rules to guide advisory committees so they can represent the industry more effectively.

The NGFA thanked the House for moving the bill forward and asked the Senate to do the same before the law expires. A lapse could disrupt grain inspections and harm the grain export market.

“This legislation is key to keeping U.S. grain strong and trusted in the world market,” Friant said.

The U.S. grain inspection system is vital for farmers, grain handlers, and international buyers. By renewing and updating the USGSA, Congress helps protect fair trade and food supply chains.
