The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), in partnership with the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), will host a free Turkey Habitat Management workshop on Saturday, September 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be held on a private farm located in Crawford County near Steelville.
“This workshop focuses on wild turkey nesting and brood-rearing,” said MDC Regional Resource Management District Supervisor Jeff Esely. “It offers an excellent chance for landowners and enthusiasts to learn more about these popular gamebirds, their habitat requirements, and best management practices to help improve turkey populations.”
Attendees will gain valuable insights into turkey habitat development and management, with topics including turkey biology and preferred nesting and brood-rearing conditions.
The workshop will also highlight various state and federal cost-share programs that support landowners in habitat enhancement efforts.
A field tour will provide a firsthand look at on-the-ground habitat improvements. Demonstrations will include woodland thinning, prescribed burns, pollinator habitat installations, and additional land management techniques.
The event is free and includes lunch, but space is limited. Once registered, participants will receive directions to the workshop site via email.
Attendees are advised to bring lawn chairs and dress appropriately for outdoor conditions. Sturdy, closed-toe footwear suitable for walking through fields is recommended.
