Breeding stock grows amidst pig crop drops

By Blake Jackson

As of September 1, 2024, Missouri's hog and pig inventory totaled 3.45 million head, reflecting a 1% increase from June 1, 2024, while remaining unchanged compared to the previous year.

The breeding stock stood at 420,000 head, up by 5,000 from the last quarter but consistent with figures from 2023. Market hogs accounted for 3.03 million head, marking a 2% increase from the prior quarter but also unchanged from last year.

The June-August 2024 pig crop reached 2.46 million head, representing a notable decrease of 10% from the same period in 2023.

Sows farrowing during this timeframe totaled 220,000 head, down by 5,000 from the previous year. The average number of pigs saved per litter for this period was 11.20, compared to 12.20 in the previous year.

In the detailed inventory breakdown, the number of hogs under 50 pounds remained stable at 1.3 million, while those weighing 50-119 pounds, 120-179 pounds, and 180 pounds and over showed slight fluctuations.

Notably, the category of hogs weighing 180 pounds and over increased to 470,000 head, up 12% from the previous year.

While the breeding inventory shows some growth, the pig crop decline raises concerns within the industry regarding future production levels and market dynamics.
