Cope Grass Farm of Truxton, Missouri, has been selected as the recipient of the 2023 Missouri Leopold Conservation Award. The award honors farmers, ranchers, and forestland owners who go above and beyond to manage soil health, water quality, and wildlife habitat on working land.
Cope Grass Farm is a family-owned and operated farm that has been practicing sustainable agriculture for over 30 years. The farm is known for its diverse mix of conservation practices, including rotational grazing, cover cropping, and no-till farming. These practices have helped to improve the soil health, water quality, and wildlife habitat on the farm.
The Cope family is also committed to education and outreach. They have hosted several field days to promote sustainable agriculture and are members of the Missouri Forage and Grassland Council Board.
The Leopold Conservation Award is given in honor of conservationist Aldo Leopold, who advocated for a "land ethic," an ethical relationship between people and the land they own and manage. The award recipients are examples of how Leopold's land ethic is alive and well today.
"The Cope family is an example of how agriculture and conservation can be compatible," said Kevin McAleese, President and CEO of Sand County Foundation. "Their dedication to conservation shows how individuals can improve the health of the land while producing food and fiber."
The Cope family received the award during the Missouri Governor's Conference on Agriculture in Osage Beach on November 17.
"We are honored to receive this award," said Harry Cope, owner of Cope Grass Farm. "We are committed to doing our part to protect the environment and ensure that our land is healthy for generations to come."
The Leopold Conservation Award is presented to private landowners in 27 states. In Missouri, the award is presented with the Missouri Farmers Care Foundation, Missouri Corn Merchandising Council, Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council, and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.
