Cow College Workshops for Missouri Cattle Producers

Cow College Workshops for Missouri Cattle Producers

By Blake Jackson

Cattle producers in southeastern Missouri are invited to take part in Cow College Workshops, a new educational series hosted by University of Missouri Extension.

The sessions will feature expertise from MU Extension specialists in livestock, agricultural business and policy, and agronomy.

Missouri’s beef industry contributes $1.6 billion to the state’s economy, according to Jason C. Morris, MU Extension agricultural business specialist. However, extended drought conditions in some areas have reduced pasture and hay availability, leading to declines in forage quality. Many producers have been forced to rely on costly supplemental feed.

At the same time, producers face increasing input costs, herd health challenges, and the need for affordable heifer development strategies. Still, Morris noted that strong calf prices offer valuable opportunities for farm income.

“Between unpredictable weather patterns and the constant battle to maintain herd health, ranchers need access to the latest research and practical solutions to maximize farm income,” Morris said.

To help address these challenges, MU Extension is launching Cow College Workshops.

“These workshops will provide beef producers in Southeast Missouri with education related to hay and forage evaluation, cattle health management, heifer selection and cost-effective development strategies,” said Morris. “Through interactive presentations, demonstrations and real-world knowledge, participants will gain practical skills to enhance their operations.”

Topics covered will include:

  • Forage and Hay Quality - soil health and weed control.
  • Cattle Health and Development - body condition scoring and heifer care.
  • Heifer Selection and Development - cost analysis and replacement strategies.
  • Economic Sustainability - risk protection tools for livestock.

Workshops are scheduled for September 23 and 30 at the Howell County MU Extension Center in West Plains, and October 2 and 13 at the Reynolds County (Ellington) and Shannon County (Eminence) MU Extension Centers. Registration is $20, with an additional $10 per family member.
