Explore Cost Benefits of Virtual Fencing on Your Farm

Explore Cost Benefits of Virtual Fencing on Your Farm

By Blake Jackson

Livestock producers often wonder how they can justify the cost of implementing virtual fencing. The “Virtual Fence Foundations” webinar series offers an opportunity to explore this question during its final session on Oct. 24, according to University of Missouri Extension livestock specialist Shelby Jenkins.

“This tool can reduce labor demands while unlocking new opportunities in land and livestock management,” Jenkins says.

The free program is a collaborative effort from MU Extension, the MU Center for Regenerative Agriculture, and the Missouri Fertilizer Control Board. Attendees will have the chance to ask questions directly to company representatives from Halter, eShepherd, and Nofence.

Missouri producers who have already integrated virtual fencing into their operations will join these representatives in discussion.

“There’s a lot of interest in adopting the technology, but not many producers have used it yet,” says Kaitlyn Dozler, Virtual Fence Program manager with the MU Center for Regenerative Agriculture. “This session creates a space for peer-to-peer learning designed to help producers decide if the financial investment is right for them.”

The Oct. 24 session is the fifth and final installment of the series. Previous sessions have covered topics including the fundamentals of virtual fencing, rotational grazing science, practical producer experiences, better utilization of cover crops and crop residue, and how virtual fencing can support soil nutrient management.

“These sessions provide a scientific basis for practices that improve farm productivity and show how virtual fencing can make those practices easier to implement,” Jenkins adds.
