Future farmers shine at Missouri 4-H meats judging contest

The University of Missouri Extension 4-H State Meats Judging Contest, held in partnership with the MU Meat Science Program, saw 54 enthusiastic young participants from across the state put their skills to the test. This event, beyond competition, aims to foster future agricultural leaders and career exploration.

In the junior division (ages 8-13), Monroe County 1 dominated, taking first place in the team category, with Aiden Wimmer securing the individual top spot. Laclede County and Jasper County also shone, placing second and third respectively in both team and individual categories.

The senior division (ages 14-18) saw Audrain County A rise to the top, claiming both the team and individual championship titles with Kate Robnett leading the pack. Laclede and Monroe Counties continued their strong showing, securing second and third place in the team category.

The championship team from Audrain County will represent Missouri at the prestigious National 4-H Meats Judging Contest this fall.

But beyond the competition, the program's impact extends far beyond the awards. Studies show 84% of participants feel empowered as informed consumers of agricultural products, while 83% are comfortable sharing their knowledge with others. Notably, 77% identify as advocates for the industry, and 63% express interest in agricultural careers. Encouragingly, half of the participants report increased knowledge in key areas like carcass judging and meat terminology after competing.

"This program equips young people with essential life skills that benefit them not only in their future careers but also as informed consumers," emphasizes Maria Calvert, MU Extension state 4-H agriculture educator. The event serves as a stepping stone for future agricultural leaders, fostering knowledge, confidence, and a passion for the industry.
