Improve Fall and Winter Grazing After Drought

Improve Fall and Winter Grazing After Drought

By Blake Jackson

Beef producers looking to improve fall and winter grazing strategies after dry conditions can attend a free workshop on March 20 at the University of Missouri Southwest Research, Extension, and Education Center near Mount Vernon. The event will also cover techniques for enhancing meat quality.

MU Extension state forage specialist Carson Roberts notes that the workshop will address key grazing topics, including warm-season forage options for finishing beef during hot summer months.

The event starts at 8:30 a.m. with coffee and networking, followed by presentations, a producer panel, and a catered lunch.

Sessions conclude at 3:30 p.m., after which attendees can visit a local farm to observe cover crop grazing and a 100% grass-fed beef operation.

Topics covered include:

  • Meat Quality: Jacob Tuell of Northwest Missouri State University will discuss how proper grazing can improve beef tenderness and juiciness.
  • Market Insights: Adam Boman from the Missouri Forage and Grassland Council will share research on consumer preferences for grass-fed beef.
  • Nutrient Density: Boman will also present findings from Utah State on the nutritional profile of grass-fed beef.
  • Grazing Solutions: Carson Roberts will explore strategies for fall and winter grazing following limited rainfall.
  • Producer Panel: Local producers will discuss warm-season forage options for finishing cattle.

Registration is required at MU Extension. For details, contact Adam Boman at Mofgc.mc@gmail.com or 417-693-3492, or reach out to MU Extension specialist Caleb O’Neal at onealc@missouri.edu.
