By Blake Jackson

For the week ending April 6, 2025, Missouri experienced limited fieldwork opportunities, with only 2.3 days suitable due to persistent wet conditions.

The state recorded an average temperature of 49.3°F, slightly below the norm by 0.7 degrees. Rainfall was significantly above average, with 3.83 inches recorded 3.11 inches more than usual for this time of year.

Soil moisture levels remain high across Missouri. Topsoil moisture was rated at 1% very short, 8% short, 61% adequate, and 30% surplus. Subsoil moisture followed a similar trend, with 2% very short, 15% short, 67% adequate, and 16% surplus.

Despite the weather challenges, Missouri farmers made some planting progress. Corn planting reached 6%, ahead of the five-year average of 3%.

Soybean planting was at 3%, also outpacing the typical 1% for this point in the season. However, rice planting remained slightly behind at 2%, compared to the average of 3%.

Winter wheat development showed early signs of heading, with 2% reported, up from the five-year average of 1%.

The condition of the winter wheat crop was mostly positive, with 7% rated poor, 29% fair, 59% good, and 5% excellent. Despite weather setbacks, growers remain cautiously optimistic for spring planting conditions to improve.
