Missouri Foundation Seed (MFS) has received a $3.25 million appropriation from the State of Missouri to modernize its facilities, including a new combine. The new combine will help MFS to operate more efficiently and effectively, and to provide higher quality seeds to Missouri farmers.
The new combine is designed specifically for foundation seed operations, and it features a pneumatic cleaning system that is much faster and more efficient than the traditional water-based system. This will allow MFS to reduce bean spoilage and complete harvest earlier.
In addition to the new combine, MFS is also renovating its seed cleaning facility. This renovation will be completed by next year's harvest, and it will make the entire operation safer and more efficient.
MFS is part of the Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station (MOAES) in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR). It offers 26 varieties of soybean seeds and five varieties of wheat seeds to farmers. The modernization project will allow MFS to offer more varieties of both.
