The Missouri Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has opened applications for the Organic Transition Initiative (OTI) funding, providing an opportunity for producers to receive financial assistance and support for transitioning to organic farming practices.
The initiative aims to facilitate the adoption of conservation practices required for organic certification, while also promoting climate-smart agriculture, strengthening local and regional food systems, and ensuring equity for all producers.
With a total allocation of $70 million nationwide under the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), the NRCS is dedicated to assisting producers in meeting the new organic management standard. In Missouri, the allocated funds will be administered through financial and technical assistance to address natural resource concerns. Producers, including historically underserved individuals such as socially disadvantaged, beginning, veteran, and limited resource farmers and ranchers, may be eligible for higher payment rates and additional options.
While applications are accepted throughout the year, those submitted by June 15 will be considered for the next available funding cycle, with applications received after this date considered in the subsequent cycle. Interested producers can contact their local district conservationist, whose information can be found at Farmers.gov/service-locator, to apply for the funding.
The OTI complements existing assistance programs for organic producers, such as the Organic Certification Cost Share Program offered by the Farm Service Agency (FSA). This concerted effort, involving multiple agencies and a $300 million investment, aims to provide comprehensive support for organic and transitioning producers.
For more information about the NRCS programs and assistance available, producers are encouraged to visit the NRCS website at www.mo.nrcs.usda.gov or contact their local NRCS service office. The NRCS employees in county offices are well-equipped to guide applicants on how to apply for the benefits and resources offered by the NRCS.
Through the OTI funding opportunity, Missouri NRCS is committed to facilitating the transition to organic farming, promoting sustainable agriculture practices, and supporting producers in building resilient and thriving food systems for the benefit of all.
