Missouri river flood resiliency study public meeting

Missouri river flood resiliency study public meeting

By Blake Jackson

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MoDNR) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Kansas City District invite the public to attend a meeting on December 11th, 2023, to discuss the ongoing Missouri River Flood Resiliency Study in Chariton County.

The meeting will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Rucker Banquet Hall, 119 East Broadway in Brunswick. During the meeting, the Corps will provide an overview of the study, highlighting its progress and upcoming steps. This presentation will be followed by an open forum for questions and discussion.

The lower Missouri River experienced devastating floods in 1993, 2011, and 2019, causing significant damage to agriculture and infrastructure. This collaborative study aims to understand the causes and impacts of recurrent flooding in Chariton County, while exploring potential solutions to enhance flood resilience.

The study area encompasses the left bank of the Missouri River, bordered by the Grand and Chariton rivers, including the city of Brunswick and the area protected by Missouri River Levee System (MRLS) L-246.

MoDNR and the Corps seek public input regarding flooding concerns in the area and essential factors for developing a locally preferred plan to reduce flood risks and improve overall resilience. This meeting represents the first of several opportunities for public engagement throughout the project.

Please join MoDNR and the Corps on December 11th to share your insights and help shape the future of flood management in Chariton County.

For more information about this outreach meeting, contact the Corps’ Flood Resiliency Study team at LoMoRiverStudy@usace.army.mil or the department’s representative at erin.fanning@dnr.mo.gov.
