MU Extension Upgrades Jefferson Farm for Hands-On Learning

MU Extension Upgrades Jefferson Farm for Hands-On Learning

By Blake Jackson

Jefferson Farm and Garden Extension and Education Center is preparing to serve an even greater role in community education following the completion of a major expansion project.

Already known for popular events such as the Tomato Festival and Butterfly Festival, the University of Missouri Extension facility is now better equipped to host classes, workshops, and educational programs throughout the year.

Located on East New Haven Road near Columbia, the upgraded center provides additional space for hands-on instruction and makes Extension programming more accessible to Boone County residents.

According to Charles Holland, director of Jefferson Farm and Garden and MU Extension operations in Boone County, the improvements will help the facility meet growing community needs.

The renovation increased the building’s capacity from about 80 participants to more than 110. New features include modern teaching technology, adaptable classroom areas, and spaces that support both indoor and outdoor learning.

A large roll-up door allows instructors to easily incorporate farm equipment, drones, and other agricultural technologies into demonstrations.

Funding for the project was secured through a partnership between Jefferson Farm and Garden and the Boone County MU Extension Council, with support from the Boone County Commission through an American Rescue Plan Act grant.

The 67-acre educational farm serves as a hub for programs focused on agriculture, gardening, conservation, and natural resources.

It regularly hosts workshops, demonstrations, school visits, and public events that connect participants with farming and environmental education.

The expansion also supports workforce development efforts. “We’re creating an accessible farm for all,” Holland said. “This farm is a state asset and hopefully we can make an impact on the state as far as workforce development.”

Upcoming highlights include the ninth annual Butterfly Festival on June 13, featuring garden tours, family activities, pollinator exhibits, food vendors, and a plant sale hosted by the Heart of Missouri Master Gardeners.
