NGFA Calls for Stable Trade and Better Market Access

NGFA Calls for Stable Trade and Better Market Access

By Jamie Martin

The National Grain and Feed Association has reaffirmed its support for renewing the United States Mexico Canada Agreement. The group submitted written comments during a Senate Finance Committee hearing examining the future of the trade pact.

In its statement, NGFA emphasized that USMCA has delivered clear benefits to the grain and oilseed sectors. The agreement has helped improve supply chains, increase competitiveness, and expand export opportunities for U.S. farmers across North America.

“The USMCA has been an unquestionable success for the North American grain and oilseed industry,” said NGFA. “It has strengthened supply chains, enhanced competitiveness, expanded export opportunities, and contributed meaningfully to economic growth across the continent. A stable, long-term renewal with no changes, paired with focused efforts to address SPS and biotechnology-related trade barriers, will allow our integrated North American agricultural system to continue thriving.”

The association strongly recommended a complete renewal of the agreement without major revisions. It stated that maintaining the current structure would provide confidence to farmers, exporters, and agribusinesses who rely on open markets.

However, NGFA also pointed out areas where improvements could strengthen the agreement. The organization highlighted non-tariff barriers such as sanitary and phytosanitary standards and agricultural biotechnology regulations. These measures can slow trade and limit access even when tariffs are low or removed.

By addressing these barriers, NGFA believes North America’s integrated agricultural system can continue to thrive and support economic growth. The group thanked Senate leaders for holding the hearing and for their leadership on trade matters.

NGFA stated that it looks forward to continued collaboration with Congress and the administration to protect and enhance this important trade agreement. Strengthening USMCA, the association said, will help secure export markets, boost rural prosperity, and support the overall U.S. economy.
